Tactics for increasing resistance to misinformation

This study was the first to test both independent and additive effects of change-detection prompts warnings about potential discrepancies between an event post-event information on susceptibility misinformation. Participants (N = 239) viewed a mock crime video, read narrative containing misinformation, completed memory video content. were randomly assigned warning conditions. Ecological validity enhanced by describing materials as police training exercise examining one versus four misinformation items (opposed typically higher rates in experimental research). Using novel statistical approach for this topic (GLMM), we compared across quantities participants received. Change-detection prompts, but not pre-warning, decreased rates, effect pre-warning. Results held regardless quantity. These findings emphasize utility mechanisms increasing resistance.
